College Football Spreadsheet – History of American Football

One of the first football teams in the 20th century

The history of American football goes back to the early versions of rugby. Both sports have their origin in variations of soccer that were played in Great Britain in the middle of century XIX. In these versions of soccer, the ball was kicked towards a pole or it was run with him to cross a line.

American football is the result of several important divergences of the associations of soccer and rugby; Especially the changes in the rules instituted by Walter Camp, a graduate of Yale University considered the “Father of American football”. Among the important changes are the introduction of down rules and the line of scrimmage.1 2 3 In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the evolution of the game by college coaches such as Eddie Cochems, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Knute Rockne, And Glenn “Pop” Warner helped take advantage of the recent introduction of the advance pass. The popularity of college football grew, as it became the dominant version of this sport in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Bowl games, a tradition of college football, attracted a national audience of college teams. Driven by fierce rivalries, college football is still a major attraction in the United States.

The origin of professional football dates back to 1882, with William “Pudge” Heffelfinger’s $ 500 contract to play a game with the “Allegheny Athletic Association” against Pittsburgh Athletic Club. In 1920 the American Professional Football Association was formed. This league changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) two years later, and eventually became the premier league of American football. Mainly a sport of the industrial cities of the Midwest of the United States, professional football over time became a national phenomenon. The growing popularity of football dates back to the 1958 NFL Championship, a game that has been named the “best game ever played.” A rival league of the NFL, the League of American Football (AFL), began to play in 1960. The pressure that this placed in the superior league resulted in a fusion between the two leagues and the creation of Super Bowl, that has been Become the most watched television event annually in the United States

College football is a category of American football. It is called the category that includes the competitions and matches between university teams.

The most important college football competition is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States of America.

Other college football competitions are those of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), also in the United States of America, Canadian Interuniversity Sport, and the National Student Football Organization (ONEFA) and the National Student Sports Commission Of Private Institutions (CONADEIP) in Mexico.

In the United States the most important college football is governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The teams of the different American universities are integrated in three divisions (I, II and III), according to the system of scholarships and their students’ eligibility.

Division I FBS of the NCAA
The NCAA Division I teams have been grouped since 1978 into two subdivisions: the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for the best teams, and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for the others. There is no system of automatic ascent and descent, but the NCAA decides which can enter the FBS depending on the request and meet the requirements of attendance at the stadium (with a minimum of 15,000 spectators per game), offer Of sports scholarships (85 in FBS for 60 in FCS), in addition to being accepted by one of the eleven conferences of the subdivision.

The FBS is comprised of eleven NCAA conferences. At present, the six most prestigious are the Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, ACC and American. At the end of the regular season a series of interconference parties denominated bowls between the best teams of the season are disputed. Some of the most prestigious have been the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

For much of the twentieth century, Division I had no championship match, given the large number of teams and the low number of matches per season. Instead, votes are held between the press and the coaches.

In 1992, several conferences began to realize a national championship match, although it did not represent all the teams of the FBS. This happened just in 1998 with the creation of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

From 2006 to 2013, the FBS national college champion is decided in the BCS National Championship Game, which dispute the two best teams according to the national vote.

From 2014 the four best of the ranking compete in the College Football Playoff to decide the national championship.

Division I FCS of the NCAA
The Division I Football Championship Subdivision teams proclaim their champion in the FCS National Football Championship post-season tournament with a direct elimination system.

NCAA Division II
The NCAA Division II teams decide their champion in the NCAA Division II National Football Championship.

NCAA Division III
The NCAA Division III teams decide their champion at the Stagg Bowl.

Major League of the ONEFA
Since 1930 a student football championship has been held in Mexico, with a single interruption in 1968 (due to the 1968 Student Movement in Mexico). This collegiate championship since 1936 is called the ‘Major League’, and since 1978 it has been carried out by the National Student Football Organization (ONEFA).

Major League of CONADEIP
During 2009 a group of private universities decided, without success, to separate from ONEFA. However, in 2010 the Premiere Conference of the Major League of the National Student Sports Commission of Private Institutions (CONADEIP) is materialized.
